Stuck in the Monash Freeway's Friday afternoon traffic crawl is enough to make any sane parent wonder if a weekend away was such a good idea. Luckily for us, Miss 8 fell asleep – waking up an hour later still on the outskirts of Melbourne. But at least we were moving. This meant our planned arrival time at the Big 4 Anglesea Holiday Park was later than expected – but what a lovely welcome we got.

Checking in, the kids were given their own pool noodles, as well as a complimentary pass to use on the billy karts, while I was happy with the complimentary newspaper vouchers. What happened next was a first for me at a holiday park – we were personally escorted to our cabin, where the main features were shown to us before we were left to settle in.

With a now starving hubby and kids, it was more of a luggage dump than settle-in as we piled back into the car for the short drive to the Angelsea Golf Club for dinner (one of a number of options we could use with a discount dining voucher, also provided on check-in).

We stayed in a two bedroom cabin. All bedding and linen was provided and our king size bed was extremely comfortable. There was a second TV in the main bedroom, something any parent who's had the Sunday morning Cartoons vs Insiders debate would appreciate.

The living area was spacious with enough comfortable seating for a family of 4. The kitchen was clean and modern with a full size fridge. There was plenty of storage space. The 2nd bedroom featured two single beds, with little touches such as artwork that made it feel more like a child's bedroom than holiday accommodation.

While caravan parks within themselves are more often than not geared towards families, there is no doubt the owners of the Big 4 Anglesea have taken that to another level. Little extras show they know what it's like to be on holidays with children. There was plastic crockery and cutlery and the balcony had a swinging gate with a latch - perfect for containing wandering toddlers.

The holiday park has everything to keep children of all ages entertained, including a playground, a sandpit with dump-trucks and toys, an indoor toddlers' play room and indoor recreation area with table tennis table. There is also a jumping pillow, giant chess set and indoor pool.

Although perfect for all seasons, I think it is in winter that places like Big 4 Anglesea come into their own - with so many things to do, your family will have a fun weekend no matter what inclement weather a Victorian winter throws at you.

Kid's Comments:
I liked getting my own noodle for the pool - Miss 8.
