With less than a week until school started again, I decided to leave hubby home and take the kids away for a night. With plans for coastal get-away scuttled by a change in the weather, I needed somewhere with plenty of activities.

So, we headed to WorldMark Resort Ballarat. Driving through the gates, before you stands an impressive bluestone mansion – Blythewood Grange, built in 1878. But while the building may be old, the accommodation is not, with fresh rooms featuring modern decor.

We stayed in a one bedroom apartment for $188. This included a king size bed and sofa bed in the lounge-room. For larger families, two bedroom apartments sleep up to six.

So, what about the facilities? Of course, the highlight for my kids was the swimming pool. But there are plenty of other things to do, some involving hire fees.

This included tennis rackets, bikes and paddle boats for the small lake.

Unfortunately, the strong winds meant the paddle boats were dry-docked, much to my son's dismay. I further upset him by refusing to take him fishing in the lake (Dad's domain!).

However, we did explore around the lake and the kids enjoyed the adventure playground, outdoor chess and hopscotch.

There is also plenty to do indoors, with a massive recreation room with billiard and table tennis tables. Board games can be hired and the rooms have DVD players.

For those interested in history, it is interesting to learn that between 1913 and 1981, Blythewood Grange operated as a home for boys.

It hits me as ironic that this building, for so long a home to boys with no families to care for them, is now somewhere for families to spend quality time together.

Things to note:

Check in is at 4pm (we were told we could arrive earlier and use facilities if the room was not ready). Apart from a mini-bar, food is not available on-site, so you will have to bring your own provisions or eat out.

WorldMark Resort Ballarat is part of the WorldMark South Pacific Club, which operates a vacation ownership scheme. You may be asked if you want to participate in an information session. There is no obligation to do so.

Kid's Comments:
It was really great because it had paddle boats, you can hire fishing rods to go fishing at the lake and there was a big swimming pool. It was just really cool.
